Every year the All-Star Game pits the best in the American League against the best in the National League. Before interleague play, it was the only way for fans to see players from the other league. Now that every team plays every team at least once a year, some of the novelty has worn off.
The National League is dominating the American League this year in historic fashion, winning 137 interleague games to 100 losses. The National League is so much better than the American League this year.
Look at the standings at the break. Only five American League teams have winning records, ten in the National League. The Rangers are leading the A.L. West with a sad 49-47 record. That would be good for fourth place in the National League East, fifth place in the National League Central, and second in the National League West, but 11.5 games out of first.
The National League has the Dodgers of course, who will win their third straight World Series. But it won’t be a cake walk. There are so many good teams in the National League: Atlanta, Philadelphia, Milwaukee, Chicago, even the Miami Marlins would all dominate in the American League. Only Tampa Bay in the A.L. is playing like they deserve a playoff spot.
The National League has never dominated the American League like it is now. Which means one thing.
The A.L. will win the All-Star Game. Because that’s baseball. It makes no sense.
