It all comes down to one game. Two really. The Rangers game and the Astros game.

It’s a game the Rangers have to win. But it doesn’t matter if they win should Houston also wins. 

You’d think DFW sports fans would be used to mediocrity with the Cowboys, the only team that matters in these parts, being basically irrelevant for thirty years, living in the limbo of a perpetual .500 record. In the thirty years since the Cowboys last Super Bowl appearance, they have finished 8-8 five times. This year they are 1-1.

If the Rangers win tomorrow, they will finish at .500, exactly where they finished last year. The difference is, last year a .500 record put them nine games behind the division winning Mariners and in third place. Now they have a chance to win the division. 

They didn’t get better. The rest of the division got worse. 

No matter what happens, the regular season ends today. And if by some stroke of luck, the Rangers will have a home game on Tuesday, basking in mediocrity.
