For a few minutes, it looked like the Rangers failure in acquiring a closer was going to bite them in the rear again. They’ve tried so many options, all of them failing. So, it fell on Jacob Latz.
He’s been pretty good. Except for last night. He entered the game with a one-run lead. Four batters later, he had allowed four hits, three runs and hadn’t gotten an out yet. The Rangers were down 5-3. This team just doesn’t come back to win. Except for last night.
Corey Seager led off the bottom of the ninth with his usual strikeout. Josh Jung singled. Evan Carter flied out to left. The Rangers were down to their last out. Ezequiel Duran took the count to 3-2. Down to their last strike, he doubled Josh Jung home. 5-4.
As he so often does, pesky Alejandro Osuna walked. First and second. Jake Burger up now. His three-run homer accounted for the lead the Rangers squandered. He singled. 5-5.
Danny Jansen finished off the improbable victory with a singled down the third-base line to score Osuna and give the Rangers the 6-5 walkoff win.
It capped off a 4-2 homestand in which the Rangers won a series against the Cubs and the Diamondbacks.
It was a thrilling end to an unlikely victory. And a glimpse into what could be if this Rangers offense played the best it can play.
