Bottom of the tenth, runner at second, down 1-0 after a night of offensive futility, down to their last strike against the Angels dominating closer who throws 100-plus miles per hour, and with a 2-for-34 string with runners in scoring position on their current homestand, Texas comes back to life to steal an unlikely win 2-1.
Wyatt Langford hits a two-out, two-strike double to tie the score 1-1. They intentionally walked Brandon Nimmo to set up the force place, which happened with the next batter, Ezequiel Duran. Only, the Angels third baseman threw the ball away for an error and Langford came trotting home for the winning run. Joy ensued.
All season long Rangers fans have been waiting for a spark, a sign of life, something to show this team has the ability to make the playoffs, and has earned right to call themselves a playoff-worthy team. Maybe this is it. Maybe, finally, against the horrible Angels, who beat them three out of four last week, maybe, just maybe, they can get something going.
Or maybe, like so many times before, this is just Lucy pulling the football away from Charlie Brown just as he is attempting to kick it.
It’s okay to be skeptical. The Rangers have earned skeptical. The Rangers deserve skeptical.
