Nimmo to bat leadoff.

Brandon Nimmo will bat leadoff for the Rangers in 2026

It’s not much, but then again, there’s not much to talk about in spring training. It’s always the same thing. Guys come into camp in the best shape of their lives. Guys come into camp looking to have the best seasons of their careers. The team looks strong. The energy is high. This is our year.

So, about all there was to report was new Rangers manager Skip Schumaker named his leadoff hitter. It’s going to be Brandon Nimmo. While that might not be earth shattering news, at least it’s something.

The Rangers had a revolving door at leadoff last year, using eight different players. Not very successful, either. According to The Dallas Morning News, Texas’s leadoff hitters ranked twenty-seventh out of the thirty teams in on-base percentage, at just .305. That was twenty-eight points below league average. No wonder the offense sputtered so badly. It rarely got off to a strong start. In OPS, it was worse, twenty-ninth out of thirty.

Leadoff was just a black hole for the Rangers. Marcus Semien started the season in the leadoff spot but his struggles led them to eventually move him down in the order. Josh Smith got the most at-bats leading off. While Smith struggles against left-handed pitching, Nimmo’s righty-lefty splits are more even, with a .773 OPS against righties last year and a .732 OPS against lefties.

Schumaker hopes to put him there and keep him there. He hopes Nimmo can do what a leadoff hitter is supposed to do—jumpstart the offense.

They could sure use it.
