In the Too Little Too Late department, there’s Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager.

Since coming back from his third I.L. stint on July 31, in 34 games, Seager is hitting .294 with an .871 OPS. Those are the kind of numbers expected from the team’s offensive leader. 

The trouble was, prior to that, Seager was invisible. When he went on the I.L. on June 30, Seager was hitting an anemic .181, with an OPS in the utility player level of .667.

He was a non-factor when the team needed him the most, when the team could have made something out of a pitiful division and a dreadful American League. 

It’s not like the Rangers have been tearing it up since Seager’s been back. They’re 16-18 in his return. But had he come even remotely close to this kind of production in the first three months of the season, the Rangers wouldn’t be staring at the wrong end of the division and wildcard races. 

That they are still two games under with Seager’s production tells you all you need to know about the uphill battle this team still faces. 

It’s great to see Seager turning the corner. It would have been so much better had he done it all season.
