If this seems like the best the Rangers have been, you’re right. Three games over .500 is their high-water mark, achieved three times. 

After the fourth game of the season when they were 4-1. Now, after the 107th game of the season, they are 55-52. It took them 103 games to get back to this point, but here they are, playing their best baseball of the season and once again fighting off the Astros for the division lead.

It seems everyone has been stepping up lately. Cal Quantrill had his best start of the season, going 5.1 innings, striking out seven, allowing just one earned run. The bullpen went scoreless the rest of the way. Jacob Latz picked up his 21st save. And light-hitting Austin Wynns hit his first home run of the season—just his twentieth career homer in eight seasons—to raise his average to .098. 

When Austin Wynns homers, you know the Rangers are being blessed by the baseball gods. And right now, they are. 

Can they keep it up? It’s going to be a challenge. MacKenzie Gore pitches tonight. If the Rangers can win tonight, they will be four games over .500, their best mark of the season. And they would have won four Gore starts in a row. 

They’ve already won three Gore starts in a row. That’s when you know the baseball gods are smiling on you.
