In Josh Jung’s first at-bat back in the big leagues, he hit a home run to put the Rangers up 1-0. It was their only hit through the first four innings.
Then, in the fifth, with one out and two on, Cody Freeman picked up his first major league hit, a double to center, putting the Rangers on top 2-1.
The next batter, Michael Helman, on the very next pitch, hit his first major league home run, a three-run shot to left to put the Rangers up 5-1.
And, while it wasn’t a first, it seemed like it. The Rangers beat a left-handed starter, scoring five of the seven runs in their 7-2 victory over the Sacramento Athletics, off a lefty starter.
All in all, it was a good night for the Rangers. And an even better night for the players who were days before on the Round Rock Express: Jung, Helman, Freeman, and Cole Winn, who closed out the game.
It seems the Rangers have organizational depth. For the first time in a long time they have players at Triple-A who aren’t always two years away, who can come up and help now.
Maybe one of these kids will spark the Rangers the same way Evan Carter did two seasons ago. Maybe they can hit lefties.
